How you can pursue your hobbies AND become good at it

Work can get monotonous. Zoom calls, email and slack chats 5 days a week topped with Netflix over the weekend isn't exactly the fulfilling life some of us would like to have.

That's where hobbies (other interests) come in!

Hobbies are great distractions from the worries and troubles that plague daily living - Bill Malone

We don't know what interests us.

To pursue a hobby, you need to know what interests you. Finding the right hobby requires:

  • Experimentation

  • Patience

  • Being true to things that interest you

  • Not copying someone else (for the sake of it)

Fortunately, there is a way to find hobbies that interest you. Here's how:

#1 Go back to your childhood

Our childhood is when we enjoyed things for what they are. Without judgement!

The reason I write so often is because I love to share ideas, and write about them. I also liked music which is why I picked up the ukulele. These traits date back to childhood.

#2 Have a set routine and tell your family about it

You now have a hobby that you care about. Have a set time period during which you strictly do only your hobby. You tell your family not to disturb you. This also means no emails, no phone; just you and the thing you love. Establishing a routine ensures you stick to your hobby.

#3 Be competitive about it

Being competitive i.e. trying to be the best at it like a kid would helps take the hobby more seriously. This helps if you're trying to lose yourself completely. This isn't mandatory but it personally helped me to produce more. I've written 15 articles in 15 days because it's a mental challenge of 30 days. I didn't write 15 since last April 🙄
