Myths That Make It Difficult For People To Build A Reading Habit

There are a few myths about reading that prevent people from building a sustainable reading habit.

Some common ones would be:

  • Finishing every book you start reading (even if you don't like it)

  • Reading 30-50 books a year

  • Reading a specific form or genre is bad OR smart? πŸ€”

Let's Address The Main Concern

First things first, you are reading for you, not to please someone else.

Reading isn't a vanity metric. Unfortunately it's being used as one on social media.

Reading the books that have the highest rating or the best coffee shop aesthetic isn't the best approach either.

Reading is a keystone habit. Anything you do to make it harder for yourself devoids you of its benefits.

In Order To Benefit From Reading, Here's What You Could Do Instead.

Read what you love until you love to read. - Naval

Tip #1: Pick Anything That Interests You And Read

This can be anything - comics, graphic novels, sci-fi, blog posts. It doesn't matter as long as it interests you. That's the path of least resistance.

Tip #2: Build On The Interests You've Developed From Tip #1

As you read, you'll observe terms and ideas that interest you. This is your invitation to read more on what interests you. You're bound to increase the quality of things you read because you're beginning to love reading.

Tip #3: Take Action.

Reading is good. Applying what you read is even better (in a rational sense of course).

Now that you're not influenced by the myths of reading, you're able to realize and experience why it's a habit that triggers multiple results over thing long run.
